Greg McDanel Recipient of Jay T. Bell Award

McDanel Honored for Professionalism, High Standards of Accomplishment and Ethical Conduct

 

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Greg McDanel, City Manager for the city of Maryville, was chosen as the 2020 Jay T. Bell Professional Management Award by the Missouri City/County Management Association (MCMA). McDanel received the award in Maryville last week.  The award recognizes a member’s outstanding commitment to the profession of local government management and is the association’s highest honor for members.

MCMA established the Jay T. Bell Professional Management Award in honor of Jay T. Bell, who served as executive director of the Missouri Municipal League from 1965 until 1981. The award recognizes public service that displays the same high standards of accomplishment, professionalism and ethical conduct. Bell felt strongly that the professionalism exemplified by city managers and administrators was an essential part of good governance.

Greg McDanel has served as City Manager of Maryville since 2012. Born and raised in Marshall, Missouri, McDanel obtained a B.S. in Geography from Northwest Missouri State University and a M.P.A. from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. McDanel worked for the city of Independence, Missouri and served as City Administrator of Cherryvale, Kansas, prior to returning to Maryville as City Manager. McDanel is an ICMA-Credentialed Manager and received the 2016 Public Service Award from the Northwest Missouri State University Alumni Association. McDanel was also named one of the “50 Missourian’s You Should Know” and in the “40 Under Forty” 2020 class by Ingram’s Magazine.

Some of McDanel’s notable achievements with the city of Maryville include:

  • Negotiating voluntary annexation of Maryville’s largest employer, Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing, Corp. and facilitating $50.5 million in plant expansions through the use of two Industrial Revenue Bond issues, creating new jobs, and resulting in new tax revenue for all jurisdictions.
  • Securing a private hotel and 30,000 sq. ft. public event center for Mozingo Lake Recreation Park through a multi-year visioning and economic development effort. Project required obtaining local equity investment, a successful voter education campaign for a 1/8 cent sales tax, and project management of the $8.4 million public/private investment.
  • Establishing a partnership with Northwest Missouri State University to improve 4th Street, a critical 6-block corridor between campus and downtown. The $2.6 million streetscape enhancement was named a “Great Place in Missouri” by the American Planning Association Missouri Chapter in 2017.
  • Led a successful transient guest tax ballot initiative to facilitate construction of the Hughes Fieldhouse at Northwest Missouri State University. The Hughes Fieldhouse is a 137,000 square foot indoor athletic facility with a total project cost of $16 million.
  • Obtained $10.4 million in Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation for complete reconstruction of the South Main Corridor.
