Deadline: Registrations for the workshop has been extended and must be received by April 16, 2019. Cancellations received after April 3, 2019, will not be refunded. 

Location: Reynolds Alumni Center, University of Missouri – Columbia; Great Room

Parking: Special parking arrangements have been made for seminar participants. Parking will be on levels 3 and above in Turner Ave. Parking Structure. After you register, you will receive the link with the necessary steps to register your license plate. License plate, make, style and color will be needed.

9:00 a.m.   Welcome by Dr. Lael Keiser, Director, Truman School of Public Affairs

9:10 a.m.   “Bridging the Viewpoint Gap” - Dr. Wally Siewert, Director of Civic Engagement, FOCUS - St. Louis

Dr. Siewert specializes in hosting public forums on controversial issues such as public safety reform that include opposing stakeholders (police and protesters, Republican and Democratic Prosecutors) on stage together. This talk will introduce a “values balancing” approach. Attendees will learn how to frame uncomfortable discussions to maximize productive engagement. It will feature interactive I-clicker instant audience polling on values dilemmas.

10:30 a.m.  "Bridge Over Troubled Waters"

This panel will focus on crisis communication between the different levels of government before, during and after a natural disaster. The panelists will discuss lessons learned and will share experiences from the various levels of government and how they work together to come back from a disaster. Attendees will take away great resources and ways to increase and improve partnerships at the federal, state and local government levels.

11:30 a.m.  "Creating Virtual Bridges" - Hands-On Activity, Jamie Kleinsorge, Programs Coordinator, CARES, MU Extension

All Things Missouri is an interactive internet platform for community leaders and decision-makers developed by the Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems in collaboration with University of Missouri Extension and Engagement. Populated with both national and local data, the site features interactive maps, reports, and resources to serve all cities and counties across the state of Missouri. This session will introduce the online data tools to attendees and provide for an opportunity to see how it offers information for better decision making at the local level.

1:00 p.m.   Keynote - “Safety Collaboration at the State and Local Level”, Sandy Karsten, Director, Missouri Department of Public Safety

2:00 p.m.   "Bridging the Gap in Mental Health Services"

The panelists for this session will look and discuss the issue and impact of mental health in communities. They will go over real-world experiences and consider options regarding how to be proactive in getting help for those who may need it and possibly preventing a mental health crisis.
